What Causes Hearing Loss?
Sometimes it’s one clear cause. Often, it’s a few working together. Here are the most common causes we see.
Congenital Problems
The leading cause of hearing loss in infants and children — though it often goes undetected until later in life.
Physical Blockage
Sound travels from your outer ear to your middle ear through the ear canal. Clear the blockage, and hearing usually improves.
Infection
Both primary and secondary ear infections can damage hearing, especially when they become chronic or severe.
Noise Damage
Repeated exposure to sounds louder than 85dB is the most common cause of lasting hearing loss — and the damage is gradual and irreversible.
Age
Age-related hearing loss is common, though it can be difficult to tell apart from noise-induced hearing loss — in many cases, the two overlap.
Trauma
Injury to the ear itself, as well as head or brain trauma, can lead to short-term or permanent hearing loss.
The Two Main Types of Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss
Caused by a blockage along the hearing pathway — infection, a growth, or something as simple as earwax. Clear it, and sound can travel through again.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Tiny hair cells (stereocilia) turn sound into signals your brain can read. Once noise damages them, they don’t grow back — making this type permanent.
Conductive hearing loss often improves once the underlying blockage is cleared. It’s also possible for both types to be present at the same time.

Answers to the questions we hear most from patients considering treatment.
Is investing in hearing aids worthwhile?
Yes. Hearing aids do more than help you hear better — they help you enjoy social situations and connect with friends and family again. Untreated hearing loss has been shown to increase the risk of anxiety and depression, so improving your social connections can lift your mood, too. Even more significantly, the risk of cognitive decline can be reduced, and some cognitive functions can improve with hearing aid use.
Can tinnitus symptoms be reduced by using hearing aids?
A survey of hearing professionals found hearing aids provided some relief to 60% of people with tinnitus, and significant relief to nearly 25%. Since tinnitus and hearing loss often go hand in hand, a hearing test is the best next step if you have ringing in your ears.
Is it possible to adjust or reprogram hearing aids?
Yes — it’s very easy for us to do an adjustment or reprogramming. Just give us a call. Many modern hearing aids can have different settings custom-programmed for different listening environments.
Can balance be improved by using hearing aids?
Research here is limited, but one study found that people with hearing loss performed worse on a balance test with their hearing aids turned off, and better when they were turned on.
Are hearing aids compatible with cell phones?
Most modern hearing aids can connect to smartphones, usually via Bluetooth, giving you even more control through a companion app. Some models allow stereo streaming of music and video and truly hands-free calls. Come in and we can show you the technology in person.
How often should hearing aids be cleaned?
A daily, monthly, and yearly cleaning routine is your best bet. Wipe your hearing aids down before bed each night, follow the monthly technique we teach you, and come see us once a year to have your hearing checked and your hearing aids professionally cleaned.
